An Online workshop on Chitta Tanam for students of Carnatic Music is announced on the Onset of Vipanchika Mahotsavam-Celebrating Veena 2024. Tanam is basically the highest form of Manodharma that belongs to the league of Ragam Tanam Pallavi. Tanam is bound by the rules of laya. Even when there is no tala, there is a pronounced rhythm. It is the Madhyamakala that gives optimum result while singing the Tanam.
I received a mail a couple of days before posing a question. The person who had sent the mail wanted to know my take on this. I am just reposting the question here.
Question : Is there any purpose of composing a new kriti ? Like i see present day composers composing carnatic music kritis and making their disciples sing that, but i think that’s just a sheer waste of time. That’s my opinion. And in those compositions,…..
Introduction
What is a Raga ? To put it in simple terms, a combination of swara-s in certain order of ascent called arohana and descent called avarohana. Essentially it must have some aesthetically melodic content. AlApana is a means to communicate to the audience, the flavor or the bhAva of the rAga through the permitted notes and its phrases.An alapana, is the exposition of a raaga or tone – a slow improvisation with no rhythm. In presenting a phrase of Alapana, the swaras are not spell out as such, but spell out as certain syllables like tha dha ri na.
